Everyone has a SOHO favourite... what's yours?
THE STUDENTS’ NEW BEST FRIEND
University towns have seen an upsurge of students making ethical choices and opting for cafe culture with a conscience. Instead of typical student fare such as pot snacks and pasta students at the Universities across the South West and Wales can now enjoy food that follows the SOHO ethos of organic and quality products, organic and fair-trade coffee, low food miles and supporting local trade.
SOHO has two flagship stores in Cheltenham, in addition to outlets in Bristol, Birmingham and Worcester ideally located to attract students from nearby campuses.
When the company was bought by former Compass Group employees Penny Manuel and Chris Copner it consisted of two stores and an airport terminal outlet. Since the pair took over the company has undergone rapid expansion and now encompasses seven stores dotted around the South West in addition to high profile airport franchises in Birmingham, East Midlands and Bristol, further stores are planned for the future.
Despite the rapid growth phase, SOHO are determined to avoid the stereotypical image of the ‘one on every corner’ coffee shop, while still maintaining a funky, fresh and personal feel. Penny Manuel says, “We are an environmentally-aware company and we believe in local sourcing.”
A SOHO store is easily recognisable on the high street thanks to the distinctive purple walls and silver fronts which have become trademark. The company has recently undergone a re-brand and, working with apt marketing & pr, has thoroughly distinguished itself from its ‘organic rivals’. Penny explains, “We’re sure the bold fresh colours of SOHO are a welcome break from the ‘earthy and organic’ stereotypes out there, making us distinctive in the marketplace.
Chris comments “SOHO is an ethical business that always puts the desires of customers and concern for the environment at the forefront of everything. Everyone involved in SOHO is proud of what we stand for.”
